Great Tips on Babies and Moms

We’ve heard from many thousands of experienced fathers in our workshops and have culled out some of their best tips to help you get a good start:

  • Set the tone you are “here to play” and change his first diaper – ask the nurse to walk you through it.
  • Becoming a father has highs and lows. Getting informed and ready for whatever might happen is the best thing you can do. The lows can be tough, but the highs make it all more than worthwhile.
  • Spend time alone with your baby away from mom. This time on your own is when you build your strongest connection with your child.
  • There is no one right way to be a dad. Every baby, mom and dad is unique. Lots of choices need to be made and you – along with mom – are the one to decide what works best for your new family.
  • We learn best from fathers who are doing the job. Talk to your brothers, friends and other dads around you. You can get stuff off your chest, gain some perspective or even get inspired.
  • Most of what you need to know comes naturally. Change his diapers, rock him to sleep, give him a bath, and within a week or two you'll start feeling like a natural.
  • Fatherhood is about sacrifice, honor, and fulfillment as a man. It takes time to adjust, so cut your self some slack but never stop trying.
  • Before she arrives, you will have little idea how important you will be to your child, or how important she will be to you. Just know that there are great reasons us dads give it everything we have.
  • No matter what happened during pregnancy — whether or not you played Mozart to the baby or rubbed mom-to-be’s back enough, remember the rubber hits the road when the baby is born. What happens after that is what counts.
  • And especially in these over commercialized, hyper compulsive child rearing times - don’t sweat the small stuff.
