Whenever I coach or visit a Boot Camp workshop, I always hear a new comment that I feel all new dads should hear. A few more from Denver, CO and Mission Viejo, CA for rookie dads-to-be:
- Wear a Long Sleeve Shirt to Your Baby’s Birth Hospital air conditioning keeps the rooms cool. With only a short sleeve shirt or t-shirt, it can get downright cold and running home to get something warmer is not an option. Add something to keep you warm to your hospital bag.
- Keep Clean to Keep the OB Nurses Happy Probably the last thing on your mind when the labor alarm goes off is when you last took a shower or brushed your teeth. OB nurses notice if you smell bad and you are going to be in close proximity with them for hours. Typically you will have time to take a shower before you come to the hospital, or once there, showers are available. So be prepared with a change of clothes and a toothbrush.
- Review Her “What to Expect” Guide Together This cuts new ground for guys. It is tough enough to read one book about becoming a father (our Crash Course for Dads-To-Be is the “cliff notes” version) without reading her books about becoming a mom. But two rookies reported they were sitting down with their partners and reviewing her month-by-month guide together, which has to be the ultimate show of support for a mom-to-be. The next best thing is to periodically pick up her guide and pick out something in the current month to ask her about.
